After a glorious mid-morning, the clouds and rain quickly covered us again.
While I was outside during the brief period of sun, I saw a very distant
skein of migrating geese over the Columbia River headed Southeast. I
couldn't tell what they were due to the 3-mile (as the crow flies) distance
from our house. Monday, though, I saw and heard countless skeins and V's of
very noisy geese migrating over. Hundreds of geese. The clouds were too
thick for a positive ID on all. By the sound, I can say that some, though,
were definitely CACKLERS.



Today (Tuesday), I was pleased to see a MOURNING DOVE
http://flic.kr/p/g823ir in our yard. There are three EURASION COLLARED
DOVES living about a mile downhill from us. I see them on a regular basis
when I drive by their power-line perch. But this lone Mourning Dove is an
infrequent visitor.



We also have some resident ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, both male and female. I just
learned that it is okay to up the sugar content in this kind of weather, and
the Anna's very much appreciate it, judging by the increased frequency of
their visits to both feeders. This young male http://flic.kr/p/g818jx has
been enthusiastically serenading the yard for about a week now. If you look
closely at the photo, you can see that he is holding his crown and gorget
feathers out while he sings. We also see at least one female visiting the
feeders on a daily basis.



On Monday, an small flock of GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS exploded out of a bush
in the neighbors' driveway as I passed by.
