A male Black-backed Woodpecker was drumming yesterday on a burnt snag near
the former hawk watch site at Diamond Head on Table Mt., east of Blewett
Pass. This spot is at the junction of Forest Roads 9712 and 35. Access to
the spot is somewhat restricted at the moment by work on the forest roads in
the area. 9716 east from Hwy. 97 is closed Mon.-Thus. 9712 is also being
repaired but should be open soon, and you can reach 9712 by taking 9711 east
from Hwy. 97. There are lots of charred trees in the general vicinity from
fires a year ago, and this is a good elevation/forest type for Black-backed
Woodpeckers too.
