Yesterday morning I birded for about 4 hours hitting several areas
within Discovery Park. The highlight was seeing three HARLEQUIN DUCKS
flying from north to south near the West Point Lighthouse. Seldom do
I see Harlequins at Discovery Park. Also near the Lighthouse were a
pair of COMMON LOONS and a couple of RHINOCEROS AUKLETS.
There was a MERLIN (seen both yesterday and the day before) in a
snag near the church - South Parking Lot area. A TOWNSEND'S WARBLER
was working the trees near the visitor's center and I had a singing
HUTTON'S VIREO in some conifers to the east of the Aviation Tower.
There are several RED-NECKED GREBES in breeding plumage along the
north shoreline and lots of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (both Audubons &
Myrtle) near the fresh water pond also along the north shoreline.
I ended up with 49 species - with lots of singing Ruby-crowned
Kinglets and a few Orange-crowned Warblers providing for a nice Spring
day of birding.
