Currently on TV (at least on satellite TV) there is a DirecTV ad on and if you listen closely you'll hear two territory calls of the mountain quail. The commercial is the one in which a bored person ends up stranded in the wilderness, eats wild berries, hallucinates and chases imaginary butterflies into dangerous and illegal situations (a drug deal). The commercial looks to have been filmed somewhere in California from the vegetation in the background. Never have I heard Mt. Quail calls on a commercial until this one. I doubt the producers even knew the species of bird on the sound track.

While birding with Blair Bernson this morning (he got his mountain quail early on) we headed out to a couple good birding spots. Out at Menard's Landing county park by the heel of Hood Canal we were astounded to see an adult Swainson's Hawk fly over for several seconds. He sent the information to someone for verification.

You just never know what you'll find in Mason County (usually it's meth-heads) but today was a great birding day out here.
