While walking the Dike Trail near Dungeness this morning, I came upon the year's first Empidonax flycatcher high in the deciduous trees. It was some distance away and a camera challenge, but I did get some pics. I suspect it was an adult Hammond's from the overall grey upper parts, notched tail, lack of yellow on the lower mandible, incomplete eye-ring, and other characteristics. It was calling, but maddeningly the sound was drowned out by model airplanes being flown nearby. There's nothing like a Empidonax to put one in their place now and then!
