Tweeters,
Five of us met for the first Sunday bird walk associated with the Joint Base
Lewis McChord Eagles Pride golf course folks, and despite some rain, wind,
and at first some cold temps, we had a good time hiking along part of
American Lake. We initially met at the Eagles Pride golf course, and
carpooled to Shoreline Park, on the west side of American Lake. This park is
a bit north of the south end of American Lake. We walked the trail (very
easy hiking - flat ground) from the park to Russell Landing and back, about
3 miles round trip. This being the first weekend of the fishing season, we
encountered quite a few anglers trying their luck either from the shore or
from a plethora of boats dotting the lake.
Highlights of the 31 species we found include a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER
singing from somewhere on the north side of the peninsula that holds
Shoreline Park, at least 500 swallows (mostly Violet-green) feeding over the
lake, and yet another flood of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (the numbers in the
Puget Lowlands seem astounding this year). American Lake seems to hold many
COMMON MERGANSERS during Winter and early Spring, and the 45 we actually
counted were not too much of a surprise, at least to me.
Note: We intend to host another Sunday walk, most likely in September. I'll
send out further details as when the date gets firmed up.
Below is the eBird report, kindly submitted by Russ Smith.
