Subject: [Tweeters] Rosy Finch: where can I find one?

For those less inclined or able to take a strenuous hike, you can see them from your car. They winter in low elevation cliffs. The closest reliable spots that I've found are in the cliff faces along the Columbia near Vantage. The rosy-finches come in to roost for the night as the sun sets. They use old Cliff Swallow nests, holes in the rocks, or just wedge themselves into cracks in the rock walls. We have seen them along Huntzinger road where the road hugs the cliff and in Frenchman Coulee across the river. We've never looked for them along the Gingko State Park overlook and boat launch; but, I would expect them to be there also. Listen for the calls as they fly in and then be alert -- they enter their roost and disappear in the blink of an eye.

I have seen Rosy Finches during early-season visits in different years to Mt Ellinor, along the 'long traverse' section of the summer trail. They were grazing/browsing at the edge of the receding snow field that still crossed part of the trail. I believe it was June and at about 4400'.

If you go, take plenty of water for yourself...and do't stare at the mama goat with kids. It's a strenuous hike but very do-able if you stay with your own pace.

For many years, the Rosy Finch (any subspecies) has been on my "wish list." Where are the most likely locations (any month) within a few hours' drive from Bremerton?
