In researching conservation and environmental issues, I have read both good and bad things about bird feeders.? Arguments in favor say that feeders help birds survive the winter in greater numbers, particularly in hard winters when food is scarce.? Arguments opposed say that feeders increase birds' disease load by concentrating large numbers in close proximity, and can favor urban-adaptable species at the expense of those that require undeveloped habitat.? Certainly it is indisputable that some species' winter ranges have changed as a direct result of feeders; whether this is "good" or "bad" in itself depends on your values.

So: are there any objective, data-driven studies examining this issue apart from the emotions on both sides?
