*SYRE CENTER OPENS TO THE PUBLIC TO SHOWCASE BIRDS WITH NORTH
CASCADES AUDUBON SOCIETY*

Thursday-Sunday, August 21 - September 12; 12-5 PM

What has more than 1000 legs, 500 beaks and 3+ million feathers? The
Whatcom Museum's bird collection!

*For three weeks starting Thursday, August 21, the birds and other
permanent historical exhibits will be open to the public in the Syre
Education Center.* The museum has teamed up with the North Cascades Audubon
Society to offer a variety of activities, programs and workshops that
highlight the birds, including two ways to win prizes through Audubon Bird
Finders.

Relics of a period when taxidermy was a mainstay of natural history
museums, the 500+ birds are housed in the Syre Education Center, typically
open only to school tours or by appointment. The Syre Education Center is
located at 201 Prospect Street next to Old City Hall. Regular admission
($10 for adults) provides entrance to all three of the Museum buildings
(Lightcatcher, Old City Hall, Syre) from August 21-September 12. Thursdays
offer an all-day $5 adult admission. *See special rate for Grandparents
Day, September 7.*

*AUDUBON BIRD FINDERS TREASURE HUNT and SCAVENGER HUNT ? prizes! *

*AT THE MUSEUM August 21-September 12*

Visitors can explore the bird collection with a Bird-Finders Treasure Hunt
*.* *Hawks and Eagles and Owls (Oh My!) *introduces raptors, while *If the
Beak Fits, Wear It* focuses on bird beaks and feet. Participants receive a
prize from Audubon along with a ticket to win one of the many Audubon
Bird-Finders Grand Prizes for each treasure hunt they complete (awarded
October 28).

*AT HOME: August 21 ? October 15*

What?s that bird in the backyard, atop the city building or in the
neighborhood park? The Backyard Scavenger Hunt takes you outside to find
birds near home and around our community.

? Pick up a Bird-Finders Scavenger Hunt: at the museum, by emailing
Chris Brewer (cbbrewer at cob.org), or downloading a copy:
www.whatcommuseum.org or www.northcascadesaudubon.org; Whatcom Museum or
North Cascade Audubon Facebook pages.

? Complete the hunt by finding each bird and noting something
special about them.

? Turn the scavenger hunt in to the Whatcom Museum by October 15 to
be entered for Grand Prizes awarded October 28.
