Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday August 21. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

On August 16 an offshore boat trip encountered a large flock of seabirds
about 33 miles west of Newport. Among the flock were about 15,000
PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, a few hundred SOOTY SHEARWATERS, and a large flock
of about 6000 FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS. Among the storm-petrel flock were
single WILSON?S, ASHY, and BLACK STORM-PETRELS.

On August 18 a LEAST FLYCATCHER was at Frenchman?s Bar near Vancouver, WA.
The next day a possible EASTERN PHOEBE was there. On August 18 four BAIRD?S
SANDPIPERS were at Cooper?s Spur on Mt. Hood. Also that day two were at the
9000 ft. level of the Middle Sister.

On August 14 about 400 ELEGANT TERNS were in the Gold Beach area. Up to 77
have been about the Hammond Boat Basin on the Columbia River. On August 14
several hundred HEERMANN?S GULLS were at Hammond. On August 13 a FRANKLIN?S
GULL and several COMMON TERNS were at the South Jetty of the Columbia River.

Night migrant SWAINSON?S THRUSHES have been reported during the week. An
early migrant WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE flock was reported August 19 near
Oakridge. Many RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were on the ocean off Yaquina Bay
August 18. The Yaquina Bay LONG-TAILED DUCK continues to be seen. Several
BROWN PELICANS were seen August 19 on Netarts Bay.

A breeding plumaged ARCTIC TERN was photographed August 20 at Broughton
Beach near the Portland Airport. On August 16 a flock of 11 PINE GROSBEAKS
were at Isherwood Lake in the Sky Lakes Wilderness in northern Klamath
County. A RED-NECKED GREBE and a CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE were seen August
18 at Lava Lake near Mt. Bachelor.
