Hey tweets, fall migration is in full swing at the Fill. Over the past few days, we're had warblers coming through (Black-throated Gray, Yellow, and Orange-crowned), as well as vireos (Warbling and Red-eyed) and flycatchers (Pacific Slope and Willow), and today a flock of Purple Martins foraging over Water Lily Cove, an annual event. The ducks are starting to return: Green-winged Teal already and American Wigeon. It's lovely to start the day at dawn, with the still night air lingering over the grass stems, smoking with a little mist, and the tiny insects catching the sunlight like living dust motes. You never know what might have flown in the previous night, so the sense of "anything might happen" is strong. The words of Bob Hope come to mind, as he lay on his deathbed and his relatives asked him where he might like to be buried. "Surprise me," he said. Today Nature surprised me with a Green Heron flying straight at me, veering away only at the last minute with a mighty squawk and a whoosh of wings.

Here is a twitter poem for you today:

I am Eyes to find every bird.

I am Mind to name every species.

I am Spirit to feel every living thing in nature

and know I belong here too.
