Subject: [Tweeters] Port Angeles Thick-billed Murre Sunday

I birded around Port Angeles and Ediz Hook for several hours in Sunday. It
took a long time, but I eventually found the continuing THICK-BILLED MURRE
while scoping south from just outside the Coast Guard station. It was
further east than in other recent reports-off the beach northeast of the
Red Lion Inn. Once located, the bird was easy to keep track of and I
watched it on and off for the course of an hour or more. It again stuck to
itself, but did drift through the same scope view with a Common Murre at
one point for really nice comparison. Other birds around included 74+
BRANT, the 2 continuing LONG-TAILED DUCKS, over 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 1
RED-THROATED LOON, only about a dozen COMMON MURRES, ~30 MARBLED MURRELETS,
2 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 2 continuing RUDDY TURNSTONES, 4 BLACK TURNSTONES, 12
SANDERLINGS, and 1 DUNLIN.

I tried scoping for the thick-billed from the city pier, where it seemed
like I should have been closer to it, but I couldn't pick it out from that
vantage point. I did, however, see a nice group of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
(my first non-surf scoters of the day), an impressive count of RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS, approaching 100, and a PEREGRINE FALCON. Thanks to all who
have reported on the continued presence of the murre and how to find it.

Good Birding
