After a long stretch of cold weather, when farmland birds have seemed scarce and/or inactive, it was a joy this morning to walk along the hedge rows, play a snippet of a meadowlark song, and be greeted with a regular crescendo of call notes and songs by no less than a flock of 30 Western Meadowlarks. It seemed they welcomed the chance to greet the sun's warmth, as did I. If you have heard the call of the occasional meadowlark where they nest, you might imagine what a symphony of 30 sounds like; talk about a Harbinger of Spring!!!!
