hi:

finally had time to pore through the books and confirm the bird i saw
yesterday at 124th and hy 203 near duvall is a juvenile light morph
swainson's hawk. closest image i found to this bird's appearance is the
bird on plate 8 in peeters and peeters raptors of california. this bird
has even less color on the throat. that said, when the bird lifted off,
there was a hint of the 'bib' visible for an instant. i don't know how
juveniles mature into adult pattern, e.g., are colors on the feathers below
a white fringe that wears off revealing the adult color, or is there
another molt leading to adult coloration? in any event it is a striking
bird and it would be cool if others cd find it and report.
