Inspired by Andy Stepniewski's report from Asotin Co, I was hoping for a rare gull trifecta this weekend. Didn't quite work out, but it wasn't a bad weekend at all. I had never been to Asotin Co, so that kept me distracted from a nasty cough.
The adult Iceland Gull and likely 2nd winter Glaucous Gull were at the Clarkston landfill near Evans Rd & 6th Ave at around 10:30am this morning. I scoped the birds from the fence along 6th Ave as the landfill is closed on Sunday (actually, there were a lot of birds present today, many more than yesterday when the landfill was actually open). The Glaucous Gull had been there yesterday afternoon as well. Swallows Park was completely unproductive yesterday even though there were 2 adult Thayer's Gulls loafing there in the afternoon. I did not see the Lesser Black-backed Gull on either day.
At the marshy area at the mouth of the Alpowa Ck was a Marsh Wren and Chukar were calling from the other side. A Yellow-rumped Warbler in Swallows Park and 3 Violet-green Swallows in Asotin on 2/22 were both a little bit surprising given the date. Thanks to a tip from Steve Giles, I was able to get 2 Bohemian Waxwings near MP24 of Snake River Rd this morning. Steve had seen about 200 Bohemians in several places. 7 Western Bluebirds were at around MP22 on the wires, undoubtedly the ones Andy's group was seeing.
