Yesterday, for those who are not following a-bird, Todd Johnson found and photographed Pierce county's first record of a Lesser Black-backed Gull at Gog-le-hi-tee mitigation pond area. This sighting along with the present Red-shouldered Hawk, Slaty-backed Gull and a Northern Shrike (a hard bird to find in Pierce County) makes this area a hot spot for good sightings, as of now. I tried for over 3 hours today for the Lesser with no success. The Slaty-backed also was not seen today.
Other good spots in Pierce County for harder to find birds are the following:
The Purdy spit and Burley Lagoon area has had over 300 Surf Scoters with a few White-winged Scoters and at least 5 Black Scoters.
The Fox island pull, off once crossing the bridge, has had 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 5 Harlequin Ducks and Red-throated, Pacific and Common Loons.
Waughop Lake at Fort Steilacoom Park has over 300 Northern Shovelers, many Ring-necked Ducks and 25-35 Ruddy Ducks.
The Great-tailed Grackle still makes an appearance now and then at the housing development off of Levee Rd. by the Puyallup River.
