Subject: [Tweeters] JBLM Eagles Pride GC - Monthly Bird Walk 1-16-14 (late

Tweeters,

A cold, foggy Thursday and 10 of us walked the allowable area around Joint
Base Lewis McChord's Eagles Pride golf course. At least the ponds weren't
frozen over so some waterfowl were there. We had the usual forest species
and ducks (29 species), and had high counts for American Wigeon, Anna's
Hummingbird, and Pacific Wren. New to the count were Hooded Merganser and
Belted Kingfisher. This was the first month we haven't had Red Crossbills,
and the only finches were House - the norm, it seems for the Puget Lowlands
this winter.

We've managed to garner 97 species (will be verifying that number) on all of
our trips since we started, and hope to hit 100 soon. Target species for
this habitat that we haven't seen include Great Blue Heron, accipiters,
rails, Wilson's Snipe, Hairy Woodpecker, Common Goldeneye, and Turkey
Vulture, to name a few.

We meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg #
1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road
Exit. Upcoming walks include the following:

. February 20

. March 20

. April 17 (our 1 year JBLM Bird Walk anniversary!)

. March, May, July, September Quarterly Sunday Bird Walks. Schedule
date & time TBD.
