I was very surprised to see a Pelagic Cormorant
with bright white flanks at Stanley Park in
Vancouver today. Dennis Paulson said that he saw
Pelagics and Brandts in Monterey last week also in
full breeding plumage and gathering nesting
material. Wonder if the bird I saw was precocious
or "slow". Other highlights at Stanley Park (in
addition to just the magnificence of the Park
itself) included beautiful closeups of many Barrow
Goldeneyes (with nearby Commons for comparison), a
huge raft of +/- 70 Common Mergansers, and a
highly cooperative and photogemic female Cooper's
Hawk with its tail fully splayed in the sun. If
