I answer the email at Seattle Audubon, and this week someone sent us a photo
of a Pileated Woodpecker with yellow instead of red on the head. I know
that when normal red feather color in some species is replaced by yellow, it
can be a result of poor diet during feather growth. Do any of you know of
any other possible explanations? Have you ever seen a woodpecker that is
normally red-headed with yellow on the head?
