Looking at how the weather was going to be on/off showers, Sherry and I ventured down to the River S unit of Ridgefield NWR this morning. We did have a few showers, but the birds didn?t mind.
We found the continuing BLACK TERN flying over the open water of Rest Lake. We found that the bird blind is the best place to see the Tern. Along the Kiwa Trail we saw an adult VIRGINIA RAIL with a few younglings, and a dead snag tree in the far back hosted six TURKEY VULTURES. WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES were quite common on the refuge, we tallied 9 of them. Other birds seen were;
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD ? 2
GREAT EGRET ? 1
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK ? 1
AMERICAN BITTERN ? 1
VAUX?S SWIFT ? several
HOUSE WREN ? several
WOOD DUCK ? 2
CINNAMON TEAL ? 3
NORTHERN HARRIER ? 1
WILLOW FLYCATCHER ? 2
