Tim Brennan and I spent June 28th birding Skamania County searching for some species for his county list. Besides adding birds to his list we ended up setting a new June Skamania County Big Day record with a total of 81 species. We started the day with a GREEN HERON at Schoolhouse Creek on the Washougal River. The Skamania Landing area provided us with the first of several BLACK SWIFTS that we found. A stop at Bonneville Hot Springs gave us a VIRGINIA RAIL and a surprise YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. I was delighted to hear ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER near the Spring Creek Fish Hatchery as I missed it in the county last year. After picking up WILD TURKEY in Underwood, we headed north to the FR 8040 above Trout Lake, there we added HERMIT WARBLER at the Big Tree, WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, RED CROSSBILL and EVENING GROSBEAK. We even took time to have a sandwich and some beer at Backwoods Brewing in Carson and were home before dark. Wilson Cady
