Visiting Island Co on Saturday, I was surprised how easy this county is. I easily reached 100 species in just 2 well-timed days. While I didn't see any rare birds, I enjoyed 2 Eared Grebes (ocean side of Bos Lake in a tight flock of about 35 Horneds, with at least one bird of each species already in full breeding plumage), 5 Trumpeter Swans (off Dike Rd; Dugalla Bay), 2 Eurasian Wigeons (also Dugalla Bay), a Long-tailed Duck (off Bos Lake), Harlequin Ducks in multiple locations including the Coupeville ferry dock, Surfbirds & Black Turnstones (at Oak Harbor marina), a TV (at Bos Lake), 2 Anna's Hummingbird (1 at Sand Spit, the other I don't remember any more) and a Rufous Hummingbird at Deception Pass Marina. Deer Lagoon yielded many Dunlin and Black-bellied Plovers. Is Canada Goose really a 2 for Island county??
Back in Lewis Co today, I ran into Bill Tweit and he had all important birds already lined up in the scope at the parking lot at the end of Goodrich Rd: There were at least two 1st cycle Glaucous Gulls, a few Herring and Thayer's, a couple of Westerns, a Bonaparte's Gull and a Horned Grebe (my first Horned Grebe in a flooded field!). The Black Phoebe continues at the Dry Creek slough along Goodrich Rd (south side of the bridge). 2 Anna's Hummingbirds were at Fort Borst Park.
