Hey tweets, I got to the Fill this morning before dawn to watch the smoky mist slowly distill into drops of diamond, emerald, and ruby on the grass stems as the sun rose. Flyovers at this time between night and dawn can be thrilling, and this morning was no exception. I got to watch an alabaster-pink Common Merganser fly overhead, his feathers catching the sun that had still not topped the horizon but lit him up from below. Truly a wonder of nature.

Shorebirds are still coming through - a Greater Yellowlegs was calling and flying around. Hordes of Vaux?s Swifts darted over the top of the alder grove, which apparently was hosting a gargantuan bug hatch. Two Wood Ducks are thinking about setting up a nest in that grove, but I rather think in the end they will decline to lease the property. Too much activity in the neighborhood, what with birders staring, joggers jogging, and commuters commuting along Wahkiakum Lane nearby.

Best bird of the day: a LAZULI BUNTING in the Wedding Rock bushes.

Here is a twitter poem for you today:

I walked the trail this morning
before the robin sang,
and the wren.
Before the world woke.
Wild nature and I, alone.
At peace.
