A glorious day at Eagles Pride GC - lots of sunshine, good birds, and even
better birders. Thirteen of us trekked just over 3 miles, finding a baker's
dozen FOYs, including WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WESTERN TANAGER, HOUSE WREN,
VIRGINIA RAIL, YELLOW WARBLER, MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER,
CEDAR WAXWING, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, CHIPPING
SPARROW, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and EVENING GROSBEAK.



We started at the driving range shelter, and located a CHIPPING SPARROW
nearby. The pond on the 9th green held what's likely to be the last
RING-NECKED DUCK until autumn. A HOUSE WREN was building a nest in the exact
same place on a power line pole as last year, but this year we found quite a
few more of these wrens in other parts of the walk. WESTERN TANAGERS,
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, WILSON'S WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS,
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, and EVENING GROSBEAKS were also located in quite a
few places. Unlike last year, a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER wasn't found near the
power line corridor, but quite a way over from that near what I think is a
pretty good spot for finding lots of species - near the pond on a par-3 on
the "red" course. Kristin spotted it singing from a bare branch on a
Douglas-fir, and the bird obligingly sat there for several minutes, singing
occasionally, allowing excellent views of this often skulking warbler.



The number of BROWN CREEPERS is high because we heard so many of them
singing. We likely miss quite a few during the non-breeding season because
they're not as vocal. Or is it because their calls are so high pitched that
most of those in our demographic can't hear them!



The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at
8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf
Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the
