I was successful this morning in finding the Rock Wren reported yesterday in Capitol Forest, Thurston Co., by Carol Riddell.? It was at the exact same location as yesterday and I?was able to watch it from about 7:25 to 7:40 am.? It first appeared at the bottom of the slash pile noted by Carol, where it remained for a couple of minutes.? It then flew 40-50 yds out into the clearcut on the knoll directly below the slash pile, where it foraged the rest of the time, moving among stumps and logs.? Standing on top of the slash pile made a good view point.? I recommend taking a spotting scope for better viewing.? The bird never vocalized, but was quite visible to the naked eye as it moved around below me.? It was cold, windy, and partly foggy?there this morning, so take warm clothes and gloves.? Other good birds in the area were an Olive-sided Flycatcher, Evening Grosbeaks, and a Sooty Grouse.
