Karen and I were very fortunate on our trip to Malheur NWR near Burns Oregon. We met and received advice from expert local birders on our way to Malheur NWR, while there and on our way home. The best birds that we saw/heard, but did not photo were a Ferruginous Hawk in Oregon between Pendleton and Burns and a Green-tailed Towhee west of Burns (heard only). We also saw and photoed a Whimbrel in a field near Fox, Oregon and a flock of White-faced Ibis at Millet Pond west of Walla Walla, WA. Here is a link to the photos and videos from the trip.

We were also fortunate because there were practically no mosquitoes and we didn't get a flat tire despite 40,000 miles on our tires. We met a birder from CA that got a flat despite almost new tires on his pick-up. The Malheur NWR roads seem to cause a fair number of flats. We heard of three while we were there. Even though the mosquitoes were absent the no-see-ems were plentiful enough that you could see them, but they were warded off with a non-toxic repellent. Finally, the lunch and cookies that we had at the Frenchglen historic hotel were fantastic.
