Les Carlson, Khanh Tran and I spent Monday and Tuesday in Neah Bay and had a great birding trip despite missing our quarry, the Eurasian Hobby. On Monday upon arrival we immediately saw the BRAMBLING, 2 TROPICAL KINGBIRDS, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and both the ORCHARD and BULLOCK'S ORIOLES. About a half and hour after we had gotten a room for the night the power went out in the town and did not come back on until 3:30 in the morning, luckily the house we rented at the Butler Motel had a woodstove that gave us a little light and some much appreciated heat to warm up and dry out after the incessant rain of the day. We awoke to clearing skies and calm winds but still no Hobby. We did see the CATTLE EGRET at the Transfer Station and a walk out the Cape Flattery trail provided us with views of three PINE GROSBEAKS, a species we saw again in the middle of the village that afternoon along with a PALM WARBLER. I had a great time talking to the local residents were amazed by the number of birders who had come great distances just look at birds. Even without the rarities the sheer numbers and variety of birds there in the fall would make for a worthwhile birding trip. Wilson CadyColumbia River Gorge, WA
