hiya:

went by sikes lake expecting not to see much what with the wind and all,
but it's surprisingly busy.

came across a cooper's hawk on the cross bar of a utility pole about a half
dozen poles east of the lake (on 284th ?? i guess it is). quite a long
bird for an accipitor, so i suspect it is a female. probably a bird i've
seen several times over the past month or so.

the big surprise is a juvenile golden eagle. it is fairly active and seems
to take a great delight in corkscrewing from altitude down to the ground,
showing white diamonds on the wings and a white band on the proximal tail.
it often perches on the west side of the lake where i can be seen from
carnation farm road. has a dark brown/orange bill not nearly as large as
that of a bald eagle.

at one point there were three big raptors on the ground east of the lake in
the hay field next to the horse ranch. the golden eagle, a third or fourth
year bald eagle and an osprey. the osprey was content to watch the eagles
jump around at each other. no actual contact but there did seem to be some
showing off going on.

there were lots of cackling geese in the
lake, perhaps as many as two thousand. there was at least one swan goose
in the mix as well.
