Hi, fellow birders. I know some of you have been in our area looking at
the N. Hawk Owl, so thought I'd mention all the gulls we have in the area
because of the new tribal fish hatchery located on Half Sun Way, below
Chief Joe Dam. That is the road that goes to Bridgeport State Park. The
3 ponds closest to the highway are NOT covered with netting, so the gulls
are having a feast. They rest on the large rocks on the Doug. Co. side of
the river. So, if you'd like the challenge of finding an unusual gull,
this might be the place. I'd estimate 100 -150 gulls here most of the
time, and most are Ring-bill, but.... On the Doug. Co. side there is a
birding trail with parking about 200 yards off Hwy. 17. You can walk
right out to the rocks, and there are even benches to sit on. The Hawk
Owl was seen today at 2:00 p.m. and 5 people saw it yesterday afternoon.
Afternoons seem to be the best time to find it, but expect to drive around
the roads more than once. Best of luck with all your birding.
