Hey Tweets...Yesterday, while composing a long e-mail to a friend I caught
a movement out of my eye and looked up to see a few wet snowflakes
descending from the mostly sunny sky. Our snow event lasted all of three
minutes, but when I went out about half an hour later, 9:30am, I flushed a
female Varied Thrush that was examining the debris in my yard from a recent
cleaning out of the gutters.

Being the well-intentioned birder and Master Gardener that I am, I am
letting the debris compost naturally into what is a very natural "lawn" (it
has never been seeded or encouraged in the 13 years I have lived
here...other than being grudgingly mowed).

As a result, I often have mixed flocks of birds "grazing" in my yard. It's
much better than when I had the feeders, although I do have suet feeders
deployed in hopes of attracting a nuthatch or two. I have not had one show
up in two years. The chickadees certainly appreciate the suet, and this
morning I had both towhees and Fox Sparrows jabbing at it.
