Just now heard an Eastern Grey Squirrel calling in my backyard in Everett.
'How underwhelming', many of you may think, but to me it was pretty exciting. You see, as I've posted on tweeters before, I've only heard an Eastern Grey Squirrel once before in my life, despite seeing lots of them on a regular basis. I heard that first one about a year ago, also here in my Everett neighborhood. At the time I was so surprised hearing one that I posted about it on tweeters, where I was assured by others, that Eastern Grey Squirrels make plenty of noise when they feel like it.
Well, anyhoo, hearing one today was pretty neat. From inside the house I heard what sounded like a Steller's Jay. Later, going out to my truck, I heard the "jay" again, followed by loud chatter'y, squirrely sounds, both sounds which turned out to be the squirrel giving our elderly tomcat George the what for. Urban ecologist's need not worry about George being outdoors eating birds, because George, nearing death, ain't moving fast enough to catch a sowbug, and was barely interested in the loud squirrel either.
Maybe I'll hear more Grey Squirrels after this second hearing breakthrough. With my record to date, I can only hope.
