On the Yakima Valley Audubon Society fieldtrip to Grays Harbor this weekend, we birded coastal habitats on Friday afternoon and Sunday. Saturday 4 October, we were on the the very good Westport pelagic cruise which Bruce LaBar has posted a excellent trip report on Tweeters today.

Today, 5 October, Eric Heisey was first to spot an EMPEROR GOOSE in the old boat basin 50 yards southeast of the Ocean Shores Interpretive Museum this afternoon. The goose swam about slowly and appeared to me to be quite weak.

The Emperor Goose was Eric?s second ?good ? bird of the day. He started the day by spotting and photographing a SWAMP SPARROW on Ocosta 3rd St. This is literally ?across the highway? from Bottle Beach. This street is now flooded in a few places, but still makes a great birding route. It can be reached by taking Ocosta 6th from the highway near Bottle Beach. Go east on this road to Atlantic, There, go right (south) to Ocosta 3rd. The sparrow was 100 yards south on Ocosta 3rd from this junction. Also in this marsh were several American Bitterns, a number of Virginia Rails, and one late Sora.
