Two contrasting days of birding in the park: Friday was cool, very breezy with a lowering fog; Saturday seemed to threaten rain but turned out to be quite nice even with a heavy overcast and a few sun breaks. Not much new, although the Red-naped Sapsucker first seen a week ago has returned, giving much better looks (below). Here is a summary of the notable birds.

Greater white-fronted Goose - 4 on play fields
Cackling Goose - flock of several dozen flying above lake shore
Horned Grebe - 1 by the NOAA shore, first of fall
Red-necked Grebe - 1 by the boat launch
Cooper?s Hawk - 1 adult; 1 juvenile female chasing a Norther Flicker, unsuccessfully
Virginia Rail - grunting from Frog Pond
Wilson?s Snipe - calling from West Meadow
Herring Gull - 2 on swim platform with 4 other gull species
Barn Owl - lots of vocalization; one seen flying about 100 feet up in a straight flight; last seen in area of Uplands forest
Cedar Waxwing - one loose flock of several dozen, over central meadows
Yellow-rumped Warbler - several, including FOF Myrtle
Fox Sparrow - couple dozen, all over park; lots of singing

Red-naped Sapsucker - female, in a tall cottonwood in Kingfisher Basin; working on a new set of sap wells about 20 m up the tree; given the newness of the wells, perhaps this bird will stick around for a while
