I heard a very loud "boom" this morning from the back yard and assumed it
had something to do with the sometimes-violent storms moving through today.
About an hour later, I happened to glance out the rear sliding glass door
and saw a pile of feathers blowing around. Thinking the Sharp-shinned Hawk
in the neighborhood must have made a successful kill, I went looking for the
source of the feathers.



The source was a Mourning Dove that had offed itself by striking the glass
door so forcefully that it "plucked" one side of its head and ruptured its
crop, spilling the contents. Now I know who has been taking care of all the
millet seed the other birds have ignored.



Thankfully, the bird appears to have died instantly. Ugh!
