It likely is a sandhill crane. Three of them over summered in this general
area and the Lord Hill area is on their flight paths to and from
Monroe-Snohomish and Tualco areas and the wetland/farmlands surrounding the
hill. I saw them throughout the summer in various locations in this general
geographic area and not always together.
According to Gary Ivey, a sandhill crane biologist and expert, we will
likely be seeing more of them as their range is expanding. There is now a
small breeding group on Sauvie Island near Portland.
