This afternoon from 2:30 pm I searched the area from Gog-le-hi-ti Wetland to
the Unused 11th St Bridge. The wetland itself had no gulls, and the low
roofs to the northeast had only gulls with light gray mantles. The same was
true of the containers at the Sea-Land yard north of the 11th St Bridge,
which had relatively few gulls. I spent the remainder of the time before
and after low tide (about 3:30 pm) on the south river bank, watching the
gulls come and go to bathe. At 5:30 pm, as the light was beginning to fade
I checked the river right in front of me about halfway between the two
bridges, and saw a dark-mantled gull with a white head and a red gonydeal
patch on its bill. When this bird took it took off I noted bright pink legs
and the wing pattern of the Slaty-backed Gull. Nice to see this life bird
after many tries.
