Hi Tweets,

Last weekend I birded area around Portland, Vancouver lake and Ridgefield
area. Fabulous weather and great birding. The birds that are not common in
the area were:

American Tree Sparrow: this was my lifer! It popped out from a dense bush
where there was a group of Golden-crowned Sparrows. The dark spot on the
clean chest, rufous cap, dark eye line and reddish legs were visible. I
could not tell the bi-colored bill due to poor lighting. It was smaller and
slimmer than the Golden-crowned. The bird was skittish. Not sure I got a
decent shot. It was in the small strand of bushes at the left side of the
entrance of the parking lot at the end of the paved portion of the La
Frambois Rd near the Sewage treatment plant and Vancouver Lake.

Palm Warbler: at post #5 of the Ridgefield S unit. It was with a group of
Yellow-rumped Warblers in the trees to the left. Not sure if it is the same
bird that Randy Hill reported on Oct. 10 at stop #4. Still had fair amount
of yellow on the breast and belly. The yellow covet was very visible. The
bird was feeding like crazy and jumping all over. Not sure I got a decent
photo.

White Pelican: a large group of about 40 feeding in the lake of Smith-Bybee
near the second observation station along the Interlake Trail. Later I saw
about the same number of Pelicans flying low over the Ridgefield Carty unit
at about 4:00pm. Maybe the same birds.

Great Egret: a group of about 50 feeding near the Pelicans at the same
place.

Great Blue Heron: a group of about 10 were at the same place with the
Pelicans.

Western Scrub Jay: they seem to be everywhere near the Vancouver Sewage
Treatment plant.

Elmer Rufner's Pond: the pond just past the junction of the Erwin Rieger
Memorial Hwy (501) and NW 31st Ave near the Sewage Treatment plant. Hit a
jack pot here. 16 Great Egret, 15 Great Blue Heron, 5 American Pipit, 10
Greater Yellowleg, 8 Lesser Yellowleg, Western, Least Sand piper and a few
Killdeers.

Good birding,
