depending on the habitats you'd like to visit, the better locations can
include:

- san jacinto wildlife area (low desert about 30 miles west of palm
springs, to include wetlands, scrub flat, open ponds -- my favourite place
in soCal)
- buena vista lagoon (carlsbad / oceanside)
- salton sea (numerous locations)
- big morongo canyon preserve (high desert, coachella valley)

you can also check with the inlandcountybirds at egroups.com group, which
covers almost everything from the pomona-walnut valley to the nevada /
arizona border...

feel free to email me directly about san jacinto and morongo. i used to
know a fair bit about the seaside from oceanside south, but haven't been
down that way in maybe 10 years...
