Tweeters,

Washington Ornithological Society's inaugural *Swainson's Thrushes and
Shorebirds* field trip in Clark County took place starting at 7pm on
Friday, September 5th and ended at 2:00pm, Saturday, September 6th. 7
participants and one leader enjoyed an early morning with Swainson's
Thrushes followed by visits to Vancouver Lake and Ridgefield National
Wildlife Refuge in search of shorebirds and other species that this bird
rich county of Washington holds. Some highlights:

Western Grebe - 4 on Vancouver Lake. One additional bird may have been the
Clark's Grebe that was found the morning of September 5th - lighting and
distance made identification practically impossible
American White Pelican - 25. Always nice to find Am. White Pelicans in
Clark County!
Green Heron - 1 on Long lake at Ridgefield NWR. Interesting to watch it
run across a log with its crest raised!
Great Egret - 4 at various locations
American Bittern - great study of 2 immatures and one adult near the south
end of Rest Lake
Red-shouldered Hawk - one calling bird in the woods next to the south end
of Vancouver Lake. Another flying overhead at Ridgefield NWR
Red-necked Phalarope - 3 on Vancouver Lake (code 4 in Clark County)
Baird's Sandpiper - 2 at the south end of Vancouver Lake
Pectoral Sandpiper - 3 in the channel parallel to the auto loop at the
extreme south end of a very dry Rest Lake
White-breasted Nuthatch - one in the woods bordering the south end of
Vancouver Lake and a great study of one at Ridgefield NWR
Hermit Thrush - first of the season in Battle Ground yard
Swainson's Thrush - night flight over Battle Ground, Clark County - not as
good as I had hoped but there were birds flying!
American Pipit - first arrivals! Over 45 counted for the day including
large flock at Ridgefield and several at south end of Vancouver Lake
Black-headed Grosbeak - 2 hatch year birds in the Battle Ground yard.
Pine Siskin - several flying over Battle Ground, Clark County yard
Evening Grosbeak - several flying over Battle Ground, Clark County yard
