Good morning Tweeters -

I might as well have written this at 3am since I was up chatting with the owls (Barred) this morning about 2:30 - that does seem to be their time slot.

As I was just drifting off while reading (or guess I must have been half in/half out) I heard that "Who Cooks for you" which I can't resist. There must have been at least 3 in the conversation (not including me) - the house almost surrounded by who sounds. I went to the front of the house and there was one in a cedar across the street vocalizing like crazy! (Wish I had a pair of night vision goggles - or good ear plugs! :)) Then the calls started coming from behind the house so I moved back to the bedroom and tried to get a few hoots in edgewise. (Our bedroom on the second story so I'm right up in the trees (we have 4 - approx 100 year old Doug. firs) with them. It sounded like they were getting further away so I decided to just lie still and listen. They had a few other interesting sounds beyond the "Who Cooks for You". One sounded like it ended in a rolling growl after it had a few "who cooks". And another was like it was trying to call and hork out his dinner at the same time

By the time I decided to call it "a nite" - if I was to get any sleep at all - there was one calling from one of the rear garden firs. (These are very near the pine where the hummer nested). So I rose again and went downstairs to the deck to see if I could spot one. No luck. But I did one little call - from the safety of the doors in case my call was so realistic it drew an attack - from the owl or the neighbors! After a few minutes, I thought I could see it leave the tree.

So here I sit, a tired, groggy nite owl. And will head to the beach to get some sleep!
