At 3:00 p.m. this afternoon Nancy Taylor and I sighted 15 Whimbrels (FOY) on the sand below Peace Portal Drive & Cherry Street (at the south end of the main drag in the city of Blaine), where they were frequently seen last year. Birch Bay produced one breeding plumaged Eared Grebe and 4 Black Scoters, an abundance of Greater Yellowlegs were viewed between Sandy Point and Blaine, and 5 grebe species were seen during the day, the last a single Western Grebe off the dock at Blaine. The leucistic Red-Tailed Hawk was present on Grandview Road, soaking up the rays on the top of a scrawny tree right next to the road. Oh, and one FOY Common Yellowthroat at Lummi Flats. Otherwise most of the usual suspects were present. Another absolutely gorgeous day to be out birding.
