Dear Tweeters,
Today, the first of April, it rained heavily at times, but it was pleasant in between the deluges, and good birding. No, there won't be any April Fool pranks in this message.
At DeBay's Slough were quite a few passerines, including a quiet male Common Yellowthroat, foraging in the brushy edges of the woods.
The Butler Flats still have a lot of waterfowl. Maybe that's why an immature Golden Eagle was soaring around District Line Road, in the company of a few Bald Eagles. That's the third Golden Eagle sighting that has come my way this year in Skagit, all in the lowlands, making for a good year for this species, comparatively speaking.
At Nichols Bar, now called Anne Wolford County Park, there were at least 17 Ruby-crowned Kinglets moving through the forest in the afternoon, after the weather had cleared. The big surprise here was a Western Grebe floating down the river, the first one I'd seen in the Skagit River since August of 2008.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
