Hey Tweets...A friend of mine sent me a notice that the shorebirds are
beginning to show up, as seen from her home on the bay side here in Ocean
Shores. She said she is looking at "godwits, dowitchers, and dunlin." In my
daily walks on the beach/ocean side of the peninsula, I am seeing the
telltale signs in the sand of the gathering tide of birds that overnight on
the beach...pockmarks from feeding and tiny footprints covering the wet
sand.
Another friend mentioned a whimbrel seen up near the Quinault Beach Resort,
and yet another friend was able to spot surfbirds on the jetty.
All this to remind me to mention the 20th Annual Grays Harbor Shorebird
(and Nature) Festival is coming up soon, May 1st thru 3rd, and we did a few
thing different this year. Our Keynote Speaker, Alan Rammer, is a wonderful
educator with a passion for all things connected to marine environments.
His Friday night talk is titled Bird Beaks and Bugs.
We dropped the field trip to Lake Quinault this year and substituted what
we think will be a fascinating field trip out to the Oyhut Wildlife Area
with botanist Lou Messmer to investigate the salicornia (aka "pickleweed")
marsh...a major food source for shorebirds.
In addition to the Saturday raptor field trip with Dan Varland, he has also
added a Sunday lecture, Get to Know the Raptors.
And our Saturday night auction has been changed to a dinner with a speaker
of note for dessert; Jim Danzenbaker will give a program "Shorebirds
Without Borders."
So...the brochures are finally mailed, the web site is up and current, the
birds are arriving...the stage is set for this year's spring migration
extravaganza. All that is required is your presence. Please join us for the
show! shorebirdfestival.com has all the information
