Tweets,

Today 36 of us enjoyed a great day ay Nisqually. We had partly cloudy to clear skies, no wind and temps into the low 60s. We had a 12.4 high tide at 8:13 so lots of mud in the restoration area.

We got off to a great start with a BEAVER on the pond behind the visitor center early and a WESTERN SCRUBJAY near the parking lot as we started the walk. I believe that is the first SCRUBJAY I've seen on the refuge.

There were lots of species, just no lots of any species with the exception of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS which were everywhere!

We did find 3 GREAT HORNED OWLS inside the boardwalk along the Nisqually side. The 2 young were silhouetted against the sky and the adult could be seen lower in the branches and from a different angle. They were fairly low and difficult to see.

SONG SPARROWS, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and MARSH WREN were singing all day and most of the waterfowl were paired up. We noted one CANADA GOOSE turning eggs in her nest.

For the day I had 55 species and now have 94 for the year.

Mammals seen were the BEAVER and COTTONTAILED RABBIT. We also saw a sunbathing TURTLE and a GARTER SNAKE out and about.

Until next week when Eric and Nathaniel will lead...
