The morning started off mild and calm, though later wind and overcast skies moved in. Activity levels were high all morning, although many of the water birds have gone. Several birders showed up in the morning to look for yesterday?s reported Franklin's Gull, but to no avail. There were plenty of noteworthy birds, nevertheless.

Ring-necked Duck - couple dozen, most in Sail Lagoon; seems like highest numbers occur this time of year
Scaup - only 2 Lesser and 8 Greater; stragglers
Common Goldeneye - 1 female remains; and there were no Mergansers at all
California Quail - Kite Hill
Common Loon - 1 calling and moving about quite a bit
Osprey - 1, first of year
Cooper?s Hawk - a pair on Promontory Point; they have at least 2 nests and were flying back and forth, calling, undertail coverts flared

Bald Eagle - 3, keeping the Coots moving; an adult and second year bird were doing the clasped talons doh-see-doh over Kingfisher Basin, pulling out just feet above ground
Red-tailed Hawk - 2 soaring high over the south end
Virginia Rail - at least 3 calling from different locations, one with the kiddick call
Killdeer - a pair have a nest in the bark hill
Wilson?s Snipe - one called early by the children?s garden
Gulls - still plenty of Mews, 1 Ring-billed, 1 California, several Glaucous-winged in full breeding plumage
Eurasian Collared-Dove - 2 flew over Kite Hill, later heard calling
Barn Owl - 2 hissing from box across 62nd from tennis center, then an adult did a food drop; at least 1 hissing from community center box and an adult which had been perched in a tree across the street flew in to the box just before dawn
Merlin - 1 or 2; one was seen flying from the meadows west to the Sand Point neighborhood; another was seen flying from Promontory Point south to Windermere
Bushtit - a pair nest-building, not far from a ransacked nest
Orange-crowned Warbler and Common Yellowthroat - 2 each
Yellow-rumped Warbler - at least 15, 4 of which were Myrtles, a high ratio for the park
Fox and Lincoln?s Sparrow - a couple lingering
Brown-headed Cowbird - an explosion, maybe 2 dozen, very vocal

For the day, 69 species.
