I have been going each week to Gold Creek, in the Green Mountain State Forest in Kitsap. As I came up to the beaver dam today, I heard those unmistakable notes of Common Yellowthroats -- a change from last week at the same location, when there was only one Common Yellowthroat singing. Earlier still, the Marsh Wrens were singing; and, after missing them last week, I heard them again this week. Then came the unexpected. As I was engrossed in close-up examination of the skunk cabbages (to find out what insect life is attracted to them), out of the forest behind me boomed the hoots of a Barred Owl. I remembered from living in the South that the Barred Owl is not as nocturnal as some other owls, and will call pretty much any hour of the day or night.
And as a nice final bonus, among the skunk cabbage leaves, I found a Northwest Hesperian. Quite a euphonious name for such a small, plain snail.
