Mary & I were able to visit downtown Yakima this evening. With sunset at
7:51 p.m., we arrived about 7:30, hoping to see Vaux's Swifts. Looking from
the lot behind Johnson Auto Glass, we sighted our fist Vaux's Swift at 7:42
p.m., flying east of the Larson Building. At 7:57 there were 15 flying
around, and we last saw 16 of them at 8:07, flying north past the east side
of the Larson Building, perhaps towards the roost chimney at the Yakima
Herald building. A quick drive over there didn't produce any other
sightings or heard birds, just worse spotlights and noise. Next we went to
Triumph Treatment, yet noisier and with worse spotlights, and didn't see or
hear any more swifts. We did hear the cry of a Peregrine Falcon that Mary
quickly spotted atop the southeast corner of Chinook Tower, which at 168
feet is Yakima's tallest skyscraper. It slowly and thoroughly plucked, then
fed on a dark bird -- maybe a starling or Brewer's Blackbird.

Sweet dreams,
