Spring migrants are beginning to move in. The Black-throated Gray Warbler (code 2) at Yost Park was continuing as of this morning. There has only been the one report of a Pacific-slope Flycatcher (code 2). A male Rufous Hummingbird (code 2) was found near the Willow Creek hatchery Saturday. I was able to relocate it this afternoon. There are always a few reports each year of their presence at feeders on private property. It?s a more difficult species to find in public areas of Edmonds. A first-of-year Brown-headed Cowbird (code 2) made an appearance at the marsh this afternoon. Four Barn Swallows also appeared today. These are the first since the overwintering birds were seen earlier in the year. Small flocks of Western and Least Sandpipers arrived in the marsh Saturday morning. They were not present today when I looked. For a couple of weeks now there have been reports of single Caspian Terns. This morning there were 3-4 along the waterfront. The 300+ Brants are continuing to forage along the Edmonds waterfront.

Before dawn this morning we attached six Purple Martin wooden nest boxes to the pilings between the public pier and the ferry dock. Each box is numbered on the side. If you are interested in the history of attempts to lure a martin colony to Edmonds, you can read about it at this link: http://myedmondsnews.com/2015/04/bird-lore-purple-martin/ <http://myedmondsnews.com/2015/04/bird-lore-purple-martin/> . We have included photos of the boxes and the mounting project. The boxes can be seen from the pier, the ferry dock, the Senior Center, and from Brackett?s Landing. It?s anyone?s guess whether a colony will be re-established this summer.
