Hi tweeters.
Today we hiked up to gothic basin ,5 miles and about 3000' from Barlow pass.east of Granite
Falls.
Having heard there were ptarmigans there in the past , we scanned many places in the basin.
When we were almost at Foggy lake , there was a small muddy area, previous pond.
It was about 100 yards left of the hiker track.
There were 3 chicks and an adult ptarmigan.
We went over and found them roaming the rocks just below that pond.there were 4 chicks total.
Of course they allowed very close observation ,so I was able to get some close up pics.
This was a very exciting find because having seen them at Fremont peak,Mt.Rainier
And at Mt,tomyhoi, north of mt. Baker.(thank you Fanter Lane), we had never seen them in Snohomish county.(code 4 for Sno.co.)
This is a strenuous hike but beautiful!!!! For us 8 hours round trip.
Pics on request by email.
Good birding , Maxine Reid.
