This morning, two friends and I explored birding spots along Highway 20. The first places we stopped at were very quiet with almost no discernible bird activity. We wondered if we might not have much more than a fun day together, but birding greatly improved when we got to the Newhalem Agg Ponds. Our target bird was the American Redstart, and we were lucky! We heard at least 2 calling with a brief look at one. Other notable birds were:

2+ Cassin's Vireos
12+ Red Crossbills
1 Black-throated Gray Warbler
2 American Redstarts
1 Willow Flycatcher
1 Yellow-rumped Warbler
10 juvenile Common Mergansers
6+ Black Swifts

At Washington Pass we found:

4 Gray Jays
2 Clark Nutcrackers
5 Mountain Chickadees
2 Townsend Warblers
MANY MANY calling Red-breasted Nuthatches
